We often talk about history repeating itself in Green Bay. About how the strong culture remains and the importance of respecting this franchise’s many lineages.

This rare (and it is rare) phenomenon is obvious in Ted Thompson and Brian Gutekunst.

And it’s coming full circle.
In 2009, Ted Thompson aggressively, and against his nature, traded back into the first round of the draft and selected two defensive players:

B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews.

Both players took massive second year jumps and helped lead the Packers to a Super Bowl Championship.
In 2019, Brian Gutekunst (for the first time since 2009) also traded back into the first round to select two defensive players:

Rashan Gary and Darnell Savage.

They’ve both grown significantly in their second seasons and the Packers are now one game from the Super Bowl.
Ted Thompson signed free agent CB Tramon Williams prior to that Super Bowl run and now Brian Gutekunst has, once again, signed Tramon Williams.

Drafting Aaron Rodgers was one of Thompson’s first big moves as GM; extending Rodgers was one of Gutekunst’s first big moves as GM.
The modern General Manager lineage traces its roots to Ron Wolf.

The success the Packers have enjoyed for the last three decades started with Wolf, was mastered by Thompson and has been further honed by Gutekunst.

They build upon each other.

It’s “The Packer Way” after all.
We remain thankful for Ted Thompson today and into the future.

The Packers’ next GM will learn from Gutekunst the way he learned from Thompson. And so on it shall go. Because in Titletown: history is made, history is repeated and its culture remains.

Now finish the job, boys.
If the Green Bay Packers win the Super Bowl, the transition from Thompson to Gutekunst will be fully realized.

This team was constructed by both men.

Thompson’s passing is sad, but the Packers have one hell of an opportunity to say thanks — once again covered in confetti.
