Let's talk about the city's Sponsorship, Naming Rights & Advertising Policy today b/c there are a lot of people beaking off about it online who know less about it than I do. Settle in w/ some tea b/c this could go long… /1 #yqrcc
(I will be referring to it as the sponsorship policy or The Policy to save characters from hereon out.) /2 #yqrcc
To understand the sponsorship policy it helps to go back to the Nov 25 2019 council meeting. (Though this technically all started back in Dec 2017 when the city issued an RFP for a consultant to build the policy.) /3 #yqrcc
At that Nov 25 '19 meeting, we got the first look at the policy. I remember being annoyed at this meeting b/c this is one of those items I was looking forward to a big discussion on, but b/c the meeting went so long, council was exhausted & barely glanced at this. #Yqrcc /4
There's interesting stuff in the report such as the consultant estimates the city could bring in approximately $2.2million annually from sponsorship agreements. That would be a tonne of money for the city. #yqrcc /5
Of course, the amounts cited by the consultant are estimates. None of this revenue is guaranteed. #yqrcc /6
How would the city make this money? Basically, by slapping ads and names and logos on everything like city facilities are NASCAR cars. #yqrcc /7
Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration. But that's why I wanted a longer debate on this report. I'm not a huge fan of city owned stuff being named after Cheetos & shit. It makes our city more generic and less about the people who live here. /8 #yqrcc
But council didn't really see past the fact that there was a potential revenue stream here. And the city is short on those. (Thanks, The Province!) /9 #yqrcc
These sponsorship deals will be sold & negotiated by a City Sponsorship Team that works w/in the city's Citizen Experience, Innovation & Performance Division. There was the option to shop out sales to a 3rd party but the consultant said that was a bad idea #yqrcc /10
Consultant talks about the need for a "Culture Of Sponsorship" &, man, I hate writing like this. These are words that just enter my head then immediately fall out. They must be important to somebody but… ugh. #yqrcc /11
Here's another summary of the kind of cha-ching the city is hoping to earn through their sponsorship policy. #yqrcc /12
From the consultant report: Note that their revenue estimates anticipate a new outdoor pool and new aquatic centre. /13 #yqrcc
Shit. You know, I swear I looked at the list of assets the consultant identified for potential sponsorships. I can't find that in this report, though. [mumblemumble i wonder if its on my hard drive somewhere mumblemumble] /14 #yqrcc
I'm going to look for that list. And also, I have a sick kid home today who needs attention. So I am suspending this thread for now. I'll come back later to look at yesterday's report and what happened at Exec Committee. #yqrcc /15
I cannot find this list. Maybe I requested the list and didn't get it? Maybe I requested it and lost it? Maybe I'm imagining it. #yqrcc /16
Hah! I'm not insane! I did request the list of 2000 sponsorship-worthy assets! I was told the list was "exhaustive" but had not been "vetted by Administration". They said they'd be happy to share the list when they refined the list during program development. /17 #yqrcc
That was from an email response on Nov 29 2019.

I set sponsorship aside at that time b/c the Reimagine 2020 conference had just been announced & I was trying to get an interview w/ the organizers. #yqrcc #yqr
