#HappeningNow Gov. Abbott and other public safety leaders holding a round table discussion on public safety and law enforcement, where he is set to discuss legislative priorities.
“Candidly it is shocking some cities are turning their backs on police officers,” Abbott said, citing Austin as an example.
“Texas is a law and order state, and we are ensuring we keep it that way... We cannot and will not allow cities like Austin to defund the police,” Abbott said.
Abbott says laws need to pass this legislative session that threatens access to tax revenue if cities don’t appropriately fund police.
Abbott also pushing for bail reform, to expand criteria judges must consider when setting bail, and to prevent people who are deemed dangerous from being out on bail.
Some context with Abbott’s assertion that defunding police leads to more crime. Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio all significantly increased police funding, but are also seeing steep increases in violent crime.
