Thread: Why Prodigy is one of my favorite rappers of all time.
I’ve always loved hip hop but when I was old enough to really dive into the music myself and learn about the history of it, Prodigy was one of the first rappers became a huge fan of. His iconic voice and grimy style over Havoc's beats literally made me a fan of hip hop.
I found out about Mobb Deep through Nas when I was like 13 and first really getting into hip hop. The Infamous was a huge part of me becoming a rap fan and probably helped shape a lot of my taste today. Not much I can say about this classic that you haven’t heard before.
What I love about Prodigy on this album is you could hear how hungry he was. He had such a unique and gritty style and would say shit that I don’t get from any other rapper “Rock you in your face, stab your brain with your nose bone”.
This combined with how knowledgeable and smart he was. He wasn’t just trying to act tough but he also gave you the reality and consequences of the kind of life he rapped about on songs like “Up North Trip” and some of the best storytelling ever on “Temperature's Rising”.
Prodigy on Hell On Earth might be my favorite performance from any rapper on any album ever. He elevated lyrically while Havoc's beats were even grimier than on The Infamous. Prodigy went off throughout this entire album.
His verse On G.O.D. Pt III. I could have picked any Prodigy verse off this album tbh they’re all that good.

This album is just 10/10 and probably the best purely dusty/grimy/hard rap album ever. Prodigy over these Havoc beats is the gold standard for this style of hip hop.
Murda Muzik isn’t as talked about as The Infamous or Hell On Earth but it’s still a great album. Honestly Prodigy is good as ever on it. Not gonna say much on this album, there’s a lot more I want to get to. (Side note, Kool G Rap has one of the best verses ever on this album.)
Quiet Storm is one of my absolute favorite Prodigy and Mobb Deep songs.
His solo debut H.N.I.C. is one of my favorite albums. I feel like Prodigy became a lot more open and personal in his music from this album forward, especially on songs like “Veteran's Memorial” and “You Can Never Feel My Pain” where he talks about living with sickle cell.
Prodigy had some of the best opening lines in hip hop. “I break bread, ribs hundred dollar bills”

Keep It Thoro is a classic banger produced by The Alchemist. Prodigy drops so many quotables in this song.
My favorite Prodigy verse from this album “Can’t Complain”.

“Open my wings to a new day, spread my lungs...”
If you’re a Prodigy fan and you haven’t read his autobiography, I highly recommend it. He talks his whole life and career. Reading his book really made me love his music even more. To hear about the beginning of the Mobb Deep days, his childhood etc just adds to the music for me.
Prodigy & Alchemist have 2 really good Projects together.

“Return Of The Mac” and “Albert Einstein”. Alchemist and P had great chemistry together. These albums are definitely a little underrated in both of their catalog's.
Prodigy's personality also made me a big fan of him. He had some hilarious interviews and moments. Him calling out other rappers in this interview was funny af “ go fuckin paint a house...” 😭
Prodigy’s influence in hip hop can’t be understated. He has influenced pretty much every rapper in that grimy/street style of rap and his influence is still as big as ever today when you look at Griselda and the whole underground east coast wave right now.
This thread is kinda all over the place but I just wanted to highlight how Prodigy made me a hip hop fan and some of my favorite things about him, there’s a whole lot more I could say about him but I don’t want to make this thread much longer. Thanks for reading.

R.I.P. Prodigy.
