My media salary take is that people w/ student debt and roommates, people who have to freelance on the side to get by, are never going to get livable NYC salaries if their rich colleagues don't unionize alongside them. Pubs will always be able to find another trust fund kid.
If you CAN afford to get by on 50K in NYC because you don't have debt and some of your expenses are paid by your family, you owe it to your colleagues to advocate alongside them. Otherwise you're part of the problem.
My other take is that any writer who's getting by on full freelance is either taking brand jobs they don't brag about, or they have family money. That's it. There's no magic involved.
And by no means am I saying that family wealth makes you an automatic villain. MANY of the people I love come from money and they donate, serve, organize, etc. Shaming people just makes them want to hide and horde their resources, and we need everybody at the table.
