A 🧵 on the 'Zhufan Zhi' 諸蕃志 written by Zhao Rukou in 1225 CE

Zhao was a prominent Chinese scholar/politician and member of the ruling Song Dynasty

The book covers the known world to the Chinese at the time and Somalis are mentioned in two lands Bipaluo & Zhongli
Bipaluo is modern day Djibouti and Somaliland and Zhongli is Somalia & Socotra

Zhao goes into great detail and a translation will be provided in the next tweet

The source is a 20th century reprint of Zhao's text from the Taiwanese national library
In his writings on Bipaluo Zhao details the religion, wildlife, diet of the inhabitants, and major settlements in the region
For Zhongli Zhao does the same but goes in deeper detail on the attire and particular way the Somalis here lived
In summary

Somalis in the 12th century were prominent traders, loved camels and milk, were worshipping Allah SWT, disliked intrusive foreigners, and were blessed with great wildlife 👍🏾
Typo for this one

Here is the rest of the translation, my apologies 😅
