Frank served the club for 13 seasons. 648 appearances, 211 goals. Our record goal scorer & a man who left everything out on the pitch every time he crossed the white line. He was part of sides of sides who reached the pinnacle of the game & sides who faced the ultimate heartache.
Six days after his mum sadly passed, Frank represented our club, on a pressure cooker occasion. It’s why I don’t buy into “separate the player from the manager” chat. He stood tall in the rain, cleared his throat & had the ultimate temperament to slot home a crucial spot kick.
That’s a short version of why I feel he has a longer rope in the hot seat. If I went into depth, I would be here all day before delving into the management side. On the 4th of July 2019 Frank took on the job with the club he loves. An extremely difficult one. Challenging.
The club were faced with a transfer ban. The talisman had departed. The best player at the club(arguably the best in the league) - someone the previous boss was able to rely on for magic. Not being able to add & with 31 G/A from a player gone, Frank would have to go with youth.
Four players from the championship in Mount, Abraham, Tomori & James were now a big part of things. All four are now England internationals for people who say Frank doesn’t improve players. 23 pundits were asked to name their top 4 - only one of them predicted Frank could do it.
It was a rollercoaster. Winning in Amsterdam against the previous years semi finalists, wins home & away against Mourinho’s Tottenham & a post lockdown win at home to City were highs. West Ham, Bournemouth & Southampton at home were all indicators of youthful inconsistency.
Lost the cup final. We were poor, but this was after a top 4 finish that almost nobody had given us a chance to make, had been achieved. It was more than job done at this stage of the project. I feel personally that this over achievement has been a big factor in where we are now.
The summer market & Roman decided to back Frank in a big way when other clubs were a little more subdued in their activity. ÂŁ220m was a huge outlay. The three biggest acquisitions were 21,23 and 24 in Havertz, Chilwell and Werner. Building blocks for now, but also the long term.
Injuries/illness have proven problematic in the search for a settled side, to huge players who are important to what we’re trying to do. Brackets indicate games missed > Ziyech (6), Pulisic (12), Havertz 3(but with real struggles to get back up to speed) it’s been very costly.
Going back to the Covid summer market. Great for incomings, but because clubs were reluctant to spend, Frank was left with players he simply didn’t want. These players have a very negative presence inside a building on a daily basis. Bad apples, especially in times of adversity.
Tactically Frank has blown hot & cold. The wins I mentioned earlier were great. Disciplined, yet fluid in attack. We seen a mix of both during our unbeaten run earlier in the season. Don’t let the “we beat lesser sides” fool you. It was a great run in a very strange campaign.
Since then the wheels have come off & some of Franks decisions(whether dressing room politics related or not), have been baffling. Going against the energy & industry we require for experience instead, has been wrong for me. Reactive instead of proactive substitutions too - poor.
Tactically in the recent downswing Frank has been stubborn. I understand a set 4-3-3, but when teams are finding it as easy as a knife through butter to penetrate you, you have to be big enough to hold your hands up & change things. The job requires bravery to do so - he hasn’t.
I would give Frank more time. Others wouldn’t. It’s allowed. Disrespecting the man isn’t. He’s a legend. The future is bright. Is it with Frank? I’m not sure. The reality is he now has 3 games to save it, there’s no hiding from it. LET’S GO
