It sunk in but also this just shows how little “women’s media” counts in the legacy media world https://twitter.com/IChotiner/status/1352048691238977543
A lot of people wrote, talked, reported, etc on this. But I did see it mostly in women’s outlets because... well. It sunk in even with conservative women but lots of people either don’t care or accept that this is what men do.
I think even conservative women cared in some ways but they felt resigned. If you expect this from all men as just regular behavior... I mean we know what that looks like. It’s not unfamiliar.
It’s not a story because it’s normal. That’s not the same thing as it not sinking in.
anyway it sucks. It’s a bummer. I used to think about it all the time but it hurts too much to remember constantly just how normal Trump is.
The word triggering has become a punchline which is too bad because some things are triggering. In that, after you read about sexual assault, you spend the rest of the day in a bad mood because you’re thinking about what happened to you.
Being triggered is, for me, not a huge deal. It’s just that certain things can really bum me out! And I don’t like being bummed out. I’m more fun when I block that noise out.
But I also remember who are the predators. I don’t care what happens to Armie Hammer, for example, but I’m going to avoid any movies he stars in. Just like I don’t listen to Drake anymore, or a dozen other people. It’s not a dramatic event. It’s just... I’m not interested
I know many people who feel this way. We know who is unworthy of attention. There’s no canceling or active boycotting, just an awareness of what were consuming & where it comes from
But this stance is quiet and boring. So it’s rarely represented online or in the media. The people who just... don’t. Who say, nah not for me. Who opt out. It’s not an exciting thing to cover. It’s not news
But I think a lot of cultural criticism goes too hard. It misses the majority of normal people who aren’t at the fringes but are still participating in the culture
And I’m not claiming we need more normie representation or whatever. It’s just that, when you write about what “Americans are doing,” you probably should check out what normies outside your circle are up to
