People like @MayorFrey often claim they love Minneapolis, but really they love the idea of this peaceful liberal capitalist hub. They don’t love the people who have to suffer to hold up that image. They don’t love the city enough for to change the structural inequality.

They don’t love the people who aren’t business owners and don’t hold up an image of convivial consumerism. That’s why @Jacob_Frey had no problem calling foe the National Guard and police to brutalize citizens last summer. It’s why he wants to give a murdering police force more $.

People like @Jacob_Frey are the legacy of Reaganism in America. Clinging to the idea that if we all just look happy and work in the capitalist machine, his donors will make more money and everything will be fine. That’s what puts the lie to his claims of progressivism.

He doesn’t want progress. Think about how you would treat a police force murdering citizens without consequences if you wanted progress. Think about what you would do to help unhoused people if you wanted progress. Think about how little of his tenure has dealt with those issues.

What @MayorFrey wants is the illusion of change, to pacify the well-off white citizens enough to ignore the cries coming from Black and Native and Latinx neighbors. He wants to pump up the capitalist pie in Minneapolis. And he wants to ignore or punish people who disagree.

In that, he’s like almost every other mayor Minneapolis has had in the time I’ve lived here. He showed last summer he doesn’t care about people, and that he doesn’t deserve another term. Does anybody who unleashed bulldozers on citizens deserve to be our mayor? Of course not.

He knows it. But what he also sees is that with Lisa Bender leaving the council, some of his closest supporters are in line to become more powerful. He sees the opportunity to consolidate power and fully realize HIS vision of white liberal utopia in Minneapolis.

More money to the police will be his objective. Squashing rent protections will be his objective. Colluding with @annapoetic on things like violently clearing George Floyd Square. He’s going to run on this idea of returning to normalcy when we CANNOT go back to closing our eyes.

@Jacob_Frey is counting on all of us being so exhausted from the four years of Trump that we give him a pass on doing so little. He’s going to prey on the complacent citizens and try to convince us that he isn’t a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Please don’t let him.
