I’ve owned an electric car for a year now.

Having previously owned a Range Rover Evoque, it was quite a leap from a diesel guzzling 4x4.

Here’s what I’ve learned in the last 12 months.
1) Range anxiety is a real thing, and the first long-ish journey you do in an electric car will undoubtedly scare you a little.
2) Charging at home, if you have off road parking, is a piece of piss. You don’t have to have a charger installed, you can simply run a lead from a normal plug socket. But be warned this is slow, often 12+ hours.
3) Charging publicly is easy if you plan it out. There are so many chargers, not quite enough super fast ones though (20-80% charge in 20min).

You can’t really grumble at almost a full charge in the time it takes to do the big shop, can you?
4) Driving an electric car makes you watch your speed. The faster you go (and for longer), the quicker your battery will die. Not a bad thing.
5) Acceleration is crazy in electric cars. They’re all automatic and there are no gears. You whizz forward silently and it’s spookily quiet.
6) You’ll need to get used to your home electricity bill going up. But have no fear - you’ll never wince at having to spend yet another £20/30/40 at the petrol station.
7) Another thing on charging - some power suppliers offer a cheaper rate through the night when electricity demand is low. A full charge could cost just a few quid.
8) Electric cars can be really heavy because of the weight of the battery. Mine seemed to be far better in the snow than I anticipated, perhaps this is why.
9) There’s a brilliant app called Zap Map to help find public chargers. People also leave notes on here if they’re broken.
10) Probably 25% of the charging I’ve done publicly has been free. Some chargers do break, but often, the result of this is that it gives a “free vend”.
11) There number of electric cars on the road is growing exponentially.

Better to get ahead of the curve and make the jump 😉
