RANT: Woke up to folx in my mentions not listening & missing a key lesson from why yesterday was such a novice answer from the press secretary & essential skills that allow to an adult conversation about ethically challenging topics. I’m a scholar & scientist. I’ve studied this.
1/Defensive stances are by design limiting so once you adopt one (knowingly or not) you’ve limited where you can maneuver in a discussion. By accepting the divisive nature of the question posed yesterday it legitimized it being asked that way.
2/By making the discussion about Hyde Amendment & Mexico City policy about the President’s Catholicism it erased the real experiences of folx having abortion & providers.
3/One of many other responses could have been: Thanks for the question. As the President stated earlier he is here to govern for all Americans and that includes the 1 in 4 people who in their lifetime will have abortions most of whom are low-income taxpayers.
4/We look forward to working with people who have had & provide abortions to ensure reproductive justice & bodily autonomy are protected for all Americans while developing policies that support resolving health inequities. DONE.
END/White liberals you are ill prepared for these conversations. I highly suggest once again that you go back to your book clubs & deeply engage with the ideas you learned last summer. BADASSERY is a practice & I’m not here for novice responses when folx are harmed & dying.
