/4. New @NuffieldTrust analysis comparing the no of Covid-19 cases in prisons to the general population over the last 6-months. Age-sex standardised case rates per 1,000 have consistently been higher in prison, despite the extended lockdown across the prison estate. https://twitter.com/NuffieldTrust/status/1352286810609766405
/4. Much like in the general population there have been changes to the number of people tested in prison over time which will affect the number of positive cases captured. As yet, no data has been published to allow direct comparison of positivity rates.
/4. Higher case rates matter because prisoners at high risk of Covid-19 are no longer being considered for release. The compassionate release scheme was stopped at the end of Aug with only 54 risk-assessed pregnant or prisoners deemed as ‘extremely medically vulnerable’ released
/4 Also, prisoners aren’t being vaccinated yet. There are growing calls for prisoners and staff to be prioritised for vaccines given their increased risk. @insidetimes
reported this week that no prisoners in England & Wales have been vaccinated.
