This is a constant refrain on Fox, as I discuss here: https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox-news-rejects-president-bidens-call-unity https://twitter.com/pbump/status/1352279081971277829
. @pbump is correct that the rhetorical move Republicans and right-wing media are using is reminiscent of their "deplorables" backlash. Another case: their freak-out over the 2009 DHS report on right-wing extremism https://www.mediamatters.org/sean-hannity/conservative-media-freak-out-claim-obama-dhs-targeting-conservatives-report-right-wing
The report in question was about violent extremism, but right-wing media claimed it was actually an attack on their viewers, a way to silence them.
It's all a bullshit scheme to keep the audience enraged and watching/listening, over and over again.
Another good piece on this from @ThePlumLineGS who points out that "The obvious trick is to game the media into saying Biden is already reneging on his unity promise by being divisive."
Nobody needs to pretend to believe them. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/01/21/gop-response-biden-speech-unity/
