In the Senate hearing, Sen. Blumenthal (D-CT) asks @PeteButtigieg about his commitment to the Hudson rail tunnel project (Gateway Project). Pete says that he plans to work with Congress members on this to move it forward.
HI Sen. @brianschatz queues up a question on climate action for @USDOT.
Pete says that it's going to "take whole of government approach" and includes USDOT. He cited fuel economy standards and vehicle electrification as two ways to address climate change.
Sen. Schatz cites Honlulu's major transit rail project and asks for commitment to ensuring federal support to keep it on track. Pete says USDOT will work with him on FFGA.
Sen. Schatz refers to USDOT as "Department of Cars" and says that it needs to be more for transit and multimodal.
Pete talks about his time in local government focusing on "Complete Streets" to provide coexistence of people walking, biking, and transit. His department will focus on that, too, Pete said.
Sen. Schatz emphasized that the department needs to focus on reducing traffic deaths, sounding like he wants Vision Zero priorities.
Sen. @EdMarkey is next on deck.
He asks about fuel economy standards. He wants to know how ambitious Pete will be as well as promoting EVs.
Pete again seemed to support this without much specifics.
Pete suggested that linking greenhouse gas emissions to projects for evaluation is something the administration is interested in.
