Humanity advances technologically, socially, and economically because every generation starts where the previous one ended. This isn't the case with spirituality because every new generation comes with fresh new egos and most start fresh from scratch.
The only way to develop spiritually is through experience. By their nature experiences must be personal, nobody can experience anything on your behalf, neither can they impart to you an experience you didn't have. Experiences can't be taught, they must be lived.
"Do we still need religion in the 21st century?" It depends what you mean by religion. If you mean top-down rules and authoritarian institutions, you have a point. If you mean spiritual traditions aimed at making is better, then the above explains why you're so wrong.
