Archbishop Gomez has one of the most chad histories of any US bishop. He was an Opus Dei numerary to become a US bishop, was born abroad, and has united Anglo-american and hispanic catholics in his dioceses.
He revived a tradition of marian procession and votive mass from his diocese's founding, is a Doctor of Sacred Theology, and consistently did his job of barring heretical talks from being given at catholic universities.
And not only that, but he praised summorum pontificum, and helped to foster existing and new communities who celebrate the tridentine Mass in his diocese.
He takes improving the state of the hispanic catholic community seriously, working on spanish translation of the bible - since the existing translations have been deficient in their accuracy - taking doctrine seriously enough to be a member of the Committee on Doctrine.
He's also the very first hispanic bishop to occupy the presidency of the USCCB, among other things. He wrote an entire book on a proper pastoral approach (and not just for the clergy) towards newly arrived immigrants - legal and illegal - and a piece on abortion legislation.
