This NYT bonanza tracking different districts is great. @katetaylornyt lays out the challenges and realities in the cover piece. There is 1 canary in the coal mine for 21-22 that I have been fretting about for the last couple of weeks. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/21/us/schools-coronavirus.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage
In the piece, Taylor notes "many schools will likely continue to require masks and social distancing well into the 2021-22 school year." Having watched the lack of commitment to in-person schooling in some places, we should all be very concerned about this.
We already know what is coming: UK and other strains that are more transmissible. Kids vaccinated last. Potential that kids are a higher % of cases over the summer. If there is not massive public pressure - and state policies - compelling schools to open, some may not.
This sounds ridiculous to contemplate, but we need to cut it off at the knees right now. No school should open virtual in 21-22. No school should open hybrid in 21-22 (w data showing hybrid outcomes = virtual). And policymakers should cut off $$ from any district that does.
I would seriously hope no district would even think about opening virtual next year - especially with teachers vaccinated. But having watched this year play out, I am worried that some might try.
