On balance, it is a very helpful constraint to the intermittent and recurring attempt to stoke a 'war on woke' if the PM isn't even confident he can say 'no' to 'are you woke?' https://twitter.com/MrHarryCole/status/1352242227867742212
I would be interested to know what % of the population recognise this word. I guess up a lot last year (hunch is 2/3 people may recognise it). I would also guess 15% to 30% would might say "yes" or "a bit"
I would be entirely comfortable with saying that I do not consider myself "woke". That does not involve diminishing the energy of those who might choose to adopt that label positively (though its more a caricature from opponents) or prevent me supporting liberal causes.
Sir Ed Davey told me he is proud to call himself woke. I am not that sure he is all that woke - though he certainly takes climate very seriously. But it was a response to his opponent Layla Moran making a virtue of claiming the label https://www.britishfuture.org/lib-dem-leadership-rivals-say-theyre-not-afraid-to-be-called-woke/
The values underlying the "woke" debate (and many related culture identity clashes) tend to have this shape. https://twitter.com/sundersays/status/1352246199206760448?s=19
The definition of what we are talking about is broadly shared across many people with different views of its positive/negative/mixed connotations. https://twitter.com/sundersays/status/1351992605446385665?s=19
If goal is majority support for progressive causes, a mistake to make identification with a vanguard term a litmus test.
Its popularity among opponents should make that clear, in terms of this specific label, though can respect the niche who embrace it https://twitter.com/sundersays/status/1351984748814626818?s=19

Official no 10 line is now that the PM/ government does not know what "woke" means https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/boris-johnsons-spokesman-says-hes-23360113.amp
The politics not complicated.
* Cons want to associate Labour with fringe versions of prog causes, with 15-20% support, esp if Labour base & membership is attracted to them
* must keep it symbolic + vague, as don't want to get on wrong side of core equality norms that 2/3 support

Britain is not America, so British War on Woke has to be a modest one of media/online slogans (about statues and symbols and critical race theory) that also flies the Pride Flag, marks Black History Month & pushes for gender equality in the boardroom https://twitter.com/sundersays/status/1342172822760730627?s=19
