What Amanda Gorman showed the world was everything BUT magic. The brilliance of a Black Harvard educated young woman may seem like a magical thing, but it IS NOT! She is not an aberration. She is not a unicorn. She is a POET committed to the craft, who spent time researching to
build knowledge, making critical connections, thinking deeply, writing and rewriting until she came to a place where what she learned, understood, & believed could be clearly & beautifully communicated to a wide audience. It was time-consuming, challenging intellectual work.
Inspiring, amazing, thought-provoking...all of these and more. But please do NOT reduce her work to MAGIC. Her brilliance did not drop out of the sky on the wings of fairy dust. Blacks girls & women should not have to have their accomplishments & work reduced to magic as a way
to explain their achievements.
Magic suggests what she did was not quite real as though Amanda did not actually do real work. It suggests illusion. She's real and so is her work.
