It’s utterly vital that Gavin Williamson reaches out to students and teachers, so to grasp a firmer understanding of our current situation. On the Today Programme today, he argued that the in-class teacher assessments wouldn’t equate to exams, but they obviously still are. 1/ https://twitter.com/safe_studies/status/1352209859794640896
Every year, students do examinations, but the impacts of GCSEs, A-levels & Scottish Highers and AdHs exams are more meaningful because they determine whether a student can progress onto college, sixth form, or university. That’s why they’re so important. 2/
After a year of heavy disruption, with many not having had any education at all for several months, students haven’t been able to cover content and do exam practices in the same way as other year groups have. That’s why assessments for everyone, of any form will be unfair. 3/
At S4SS, we believe that the only way to tackle some of the inequality is to cancel those exams, because it won’t test students on their abilities because not everyone has been given the right resources to do so this year. Who marks it, is not the key issue here. 4/
But of course, an entirely CAG-style system won’t work for everyone and won’t realise everyone’s potential, and would leave private candidates without anything, so the option should still be there for whoever it’s needed, and suits best. /5
