It's just sort of sad seeing British media grappling with a leftward-shift in American politics after investing so much in assuming that the arc of history was springing back towards sneering bigotry.
And it's only a leftward-shift because the coincidental enfranchisement of masses of the American electorate due to Covid voting measures means the government actually reflects existing public opinion.
The GOP have been a minority party for some decades now, which is why their only tactic is rigging elections. Turns out when you make voting easier due to a pandemic, a lot more people vote, and the result is more accurate representation.
The inability of the UK establishment to read that ahead of time is perfectly in-line with their lack of political imagination and obsequious attitude to power.
Hence their sad little tantrums about Biden pursuing the exact agenda for which he has a mandate. Suddenly we're just an isolated political backwater again; a lone voice for violent arch-capitalism and corrupt cronyism who almost literally burned our bridges.
It ties in with that article in the Telegraph yesterday, speculating that Biden's Irish heritage - specifically his ancestors fleeing the Famine! - would somehow make him more inclined to friendship towards the UK. It's a fundamental lack of understanding of the dynamics at play.
We think, if anything, Biden's administration will strengthen ties with the UK, in line with his general policy of rehabilitating America's international reputation, but it's a laughable misreading to think his Irishness has anything to do with that.
And likewise, Starmer reading Biden's *personal* moderate politics as a key factor in his appeal, rather than looking to the leftward shift that was the cornerstone of his *campaign*.
Christ, the guy's up there on the stage before the Capitol talking about the scourge of white supremacy and eliminating systemic racism. "President Biden" leans far more left than Joe Biden the man, who is basically a pretty traditional old white guy.
We're begging the UK's media to just...be better at their jobs. Because their analysis of basically everything that's happened in the last 5 years has been absolute dogshit.
And t*rf twitter now belatedly realising that they were on the same side as Trump this whole time is just 😙👌
