Frederic Dannay and his wife Rose, strolling on Shinjuku Dori one Sunday, when it was closed to traffic. Dannay is better known by the pen name Ellery Queen, which he shared with his cousin, Manfred Bennington Lee. This photo was probably taken in 1977.
Frederic and Rose were shown around Japan by another crime writer, Shizuko Natsuki, who was the sister of Frederic's publisher in Japan, Kozo Igarashi.
Last year, a thank you letter to Natsuki, typed by Rose, and a handwritten letter to her from Frederic, clarifying some comments he made about crime writing, came to light. https://www.nishinippon.co.jp/item/n/655977/

According to Rose's son, Dale Koppel, she had been instrumental in getting Frederic out to Japan. Natsuki kept in touch even after Frederic died, and Koppel has an account of a later visit he made with his mother at Natsuki's invitation. https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1998-05-17-9805070378-story.html
