So, if #RomanFortThursday is a *thing* (and we really believe it is) here’s a little thread on one of our all-time favourites:

The quite wonderful Segontium in #Caernarfon #Gwynedd @cadwwales @cadwcymru 👇👇👇
Established overlooking the Menai Strait and Anglesey c. AD 77, SEGONTIVM (‘forceful river’) was one of a chain of forts built to control the Ordovices in N Wales. It housed 1k auxiliaries

Segontium #Gwynedd remained the #Roman military hub of N Wales until the late 4th C

Its garrison may have been removed by Magnus Maximus, illegally proclaimed emperor in AD 383

4th C #Roman usurper Magnus Maximus has strong folklore links with Caernarfon, appearing as Macsen Wledig in the Mabinogion and Trioedd Ynys Prydein

His legend was later claimed by Plantagenet king, Edward I who built a Roman-inspired fortress of his own

The layout and main phases of Segontium #Gwynedd were established during excavations in 1920-23 by Tessa Verney and Mortimer ‘Rik’ Wheeler

Here, Rik (R) and Tess (L) guide some well-dressed visitors around the dig

Although the A4085 cuts Segontium, the larger part of the Roman fort was spared further development following the Wheelers dig of 1920-3 despite some houses having already been built

Today the site of Segontium #Gwynedd is cared for by @cadwwales / @cadwcymru and @NTWales, the foundations of key buildings being laid out in the grounds

There's an excellent little museum at Segontium Roman fort #Gwynedd which sells some great souvenirs (love a gift shop!)

If and when lockdown ends, it really is worth a visit @cadwwales @cadwcymru
