friends/moots, i personally don't understand the enthusiasm for zines, i'll express my thoughts and then i'm interested in hearing yours
(disclaimer: i know many of you have participated in/run zines and this is not meant to shame anyone, i respect and support you for doing so)

the 2 biggest things i don't understand are 1) the concept of modern zines, 2) the process involved to be accepted for a zine
specifically, i am talking about fandom zines (and i see charity fandom zines as a different case from non-charity ones because charity zines have an external common purpose)
i understand buying a collection of one creator's work because i know what to expect from them, but a fanzine is a collection of a lot of people's work and that's not controlled by the indiv creators but the mods themselves
the premise is the same for a non-fandom zine, but since a fandom is based upon copyrighted work then no one is really getting paid, so the overall benefits or rewards reaped are non-monetary and i guess as a creator idk if i find those benefits outweigh sharing the work myself
as in, creators wouldn't have control over the general direction of the project or who they're being published with. perhaps the collected hype for the project will boost their own work in fandom but that's never been something that i personally find important
second, i don't know how to feel about the screening process for fanzine creators. i get it's not possible to include everyone, but part of fandom's appeal is it's a space where everyone can participate and screening seems the antithesis of that
and if an applicant is already well-known in fandom, their chances of being accepted are higher because their presence would help boost awareness for the zine. so it makes sense, but that also means everyone applying doesn't have the same chance
and the people who are already well-known stay well-known. i guess what i find appealing about creating for fandom is i can write what i want and share it without the sense i have to answer to something or someone else, and a fanzine wouldn't do that for me
and publishing something in a fanzine is more the sense of being published rather than actually being published, since it's a fanmade product
as a potential fanzine buyer, what holds me back is the sense that i can check out creators' more extensive creation histories on their
as a potential fanzine buyer, what holds me back is the sense that i can check out creators' more extensive creation histories on their
own pages because they wouldn't have fanzine-related limitations? and this is where exchanges are nice too, as ppl do have prompts to work from but there's no max length and it all feels more personal bc it's catered for someone else
i have to go but that's all my thoughts i think, thank you for reading! moots and friends, feel free to share your thoughts if you have any o/
