I understand why Trump’s Twitter account suspension seems to make sense in the moment. But what if this policy was applied to opponents of Trump making statements like those below? We don’t have to be neutral when we debate limits on rights but we should at least be consistent. https://twitter.com/slate/status/1268415955937513473
This is not to make an equivalence between violent white supremacist Trump supporters and BLM protestors. (I include myself in the latter category.) Rather I’m asking Democrats to reflect on the slippery slope of interventions by monopolistic corporations in political discourse.
In Australia we cannot engage in social justice protests because the government has in practice banned them on the grounds of public safety, using reasoning applied in an inconsistent, ad hoc manner. Seemingly reasonable well intentioned limits on our rights can be easily abused.
