4 years ago tonight I was crying alone in my kitchen bc my nieces and nephews would have to grow up in a world filled with white supremacy and brutalization of their indigenous bodies as our O’odham homelands would get increasingly militarized for border wall construction.
Well they had to grow up in that world anyways because all of those things happened. But communities were activated in the process, alliances were made and tribes along the border stood up to fight the desecration of our homelands at the hands of Trump for his border wall.
The first time I saw indigenous people take a stand against border wall construction was in Texas as the Carrizo Comecrudo tribe banded together to stop the desecration of their gravesites by starting a camp to occupy the space & protect their people! They were the 1st to do it!
The 2nd time I saw Indigenous ppl take a stand against border wall construction was in California as the Kumeyaay people of the U.S & MEX came together to stop construction on their homelands! They kicked ass! I will always revere them for teaching me these things to bring home
The 3rd time I saw indigenous people take a stand against border wall construction was here in O’odham homelands to #SaveQuitobaquito. It was heart wrenching work but I saw O’odham come together to fight for the land and to protect each other.
O’odham have a saying, “take care of the land and the land will take care of you.” We all knew that in our hearts & that’s why we took a stand against Trump, against USCBP & their history of brutalizing O’odham bodies here in our homelands. The biggest players in the game.
