Great thread on #AuditoryProcessingDisorder
I've been meaning to make my own & this is great inertia ( #ADHDLife) to help me get started

1) It's thinking your whole life you have hypersensitive hearing & confused why you can't understand conversation https://twitter.com/briannasbell/status/1308181548206682112
2) It's being bullied for mispronouncing words. All. The. Time. *ALL* the words. It's being petrified of science heavy fields where you're expected to pronounce very difficult words. #AuditoryProcessingDisorder
3) It's asking ppl to repeat a word & repeating it back & having them go

"NO! IT'S PRONOUNCED LIKE..."

& NOT hearing the difference. You know you're pronouncing it wrong but you can't hear the difference so it's impossible to pronounce correctly #AuditoryProcessingDisorder
5b) It's asking *someone* how to pronounce their name and crying internally because if you mess it up they will think you are disrespectful
#AuditoryProcessingDisorder
6) It's being unable to sound out words and therefore also unable to spell words. It's misspelling the same words over and over and over again because your ears can't tell the difference between similar sounds #AuditoryProcessingDisorder
6b) It's being thought to be lazy because you can't spell. It's listening to ppl make judgements about your intelligence or worth on a team based on misspelled words. It's never doing anything without spell check. It's getting marked down on tests for misspelling #APD
7) It's having to watch lips & concentrate very hard in conversations. It's taking time to think about words "did they really just say 'potato??'" And missing the rest of the conversation trying to code break that word.. #APD 1/2
7)
**We're talking about a trip..To Go? No..um..Forego? Are we canceling the trip?? *tunes in again* No..they're talking about the drive now...potato...driving...fuck..maybe they'll say it again... Winnebago!!**

"OH! We're taking an RV!!"

👀👀 "Yes 🙄 Pls keep up" *sigh* 2/2
8) It's being so used to not understanding words that you accept words that are wrong & look ridiculous when you use them. This happens a LOT w/song lyrics. I've spent most my life assuming that most songs use random nonsensical words so think nothing of "To kill a sunrise" #APD
9) It's going to get your hearing tested over and over, bc dammit *something* is wrong! And being told you're hearing is above average & you're attention seeking until you finally discover #APD & ask to be tested for that & all *those* tests are very VERY abnormal
10) It's asking for names at work and internally going

*big dude...wearing camo, just said Tina...I shouldn't write Tina...keep smiling...aaahhhh...ok..Phil? No..um..Gina? George? Tim? Jim?? Jimmy?*

"Jimmy?"

"??? No, Jerry"

"I'm so sorry, Jerry, it's loud in here"

#APD
11) It's ending sooo many misunderstandings w/a laugh & "I'm so sorry, it's loud in here..." or "I'm sorry, I missed that.." & hoping they'll not think you are rude AND then not understanding the next sentence & knowing you can't ask again so just nodding along while smiling #APD
12) It's taking social cues from the crowd and just laughing when they do and HOPING it wasn't a bad or racist joke bc holy hell.... it's eyeing everyone all the time to try to decide how you should react to what someone just said #AuditoryProcessingDisorder
13) It's being unable to function in phone meetings or online classes because there's no captions and you can't lip read #AuditoryProcessingDisorder
14) It's being unable to take notes in class because you can't lip read while your head is down or being unable to read along in a text while hearing what's being said #AuditoryProcessingDisorder
15) It's being completely unable to use automated captions bc it mishears words *just like you do* & you can't figure out wtf that word actually was & the computers misheard word is different than yours so you waste more time doing the mental math of wtf the word actually is #APD
16) It's trying to use voice to text bc you can't spell the word and are spelling it SO badly that spell check has no idea, but you also can't pronounce things so voice to text won't work 🙃😭 #AuditoryProcessingDisorder
There's a lot more to #AuditoryProcessingDisorder but my ADHD is interfering w/memory. Its often comorbid with learning disabilities & Autism (I've got the trifecta) Some of my list might be a result of the overlap due to this. Feel free to add how #APD impacts you!
