Lots of things about that inauguration celebration were heart-stirring, but the bit I liked best was NASA astronaut Kate Rubins speaking from the space station.
Here's why ...
In 1962, when LBJ shut down the secret program recruiting women to be the first Americans in space, he said that "no blond with a ponytail" was going to be the first American in space – a reference to pilot Jerrie Cobb, who had excelled in the astronaut screening tests ...
When Flight Engineer Rubins spoke from the ISS tonight, she talked about the science she and her colleagues are working on, and global cooperation in space.
And while she spoke, her blond ponytail floated wildly behind her, untethered by gravity.
...and if you're wondering why you never heard about a secret plan to recruit American women to go into space in the late '50s – ask your local library for a copy of a book I wrote called Promised the Moon, that tells the story of Jerrie Cobb + the 'First Lady Astronaut Trainees'
... it turns out having an American in space be with a blond with a ponytail is an excellent look.
