#Bears DC THREAD:
Chicago is clearly working through all of their options to find right fit. After losing Fangio it was a tough assignment to replace him because he was the only guy in the NFL showing two high looks every snap. Pagano came in and tried to replicate. Tough task.

It’s easy to watch tape, talk to the surrounding staff/players and copy what someone else is running. To replicate the disguises and truly teach disciplined rotations every snap is a different story. Chuck ran cover 6 to an extent but lacked in the cover 4 match coverages
You saw this in EJack slow regression in not only his production but just his overall play. In 2018 he was a very disciplined safety that took what he was given which was a lot because the defense was producing at a high level. In 2019 and more so in 2018 he pressed to make plays
He’s the skeleton key to this defense. He’s the FIELD SAF so he’s a main component to the disguises and rotations. When he’s out of position the entire unit is out of position. There’s a lot of trust in match coverages. When that’s not there it’s impossible to play smart AND fast
This is fixable. Not easily but I have full faith in Eddie Jackson the all pro to return to form.
Chicago clearly wants to keep these two high coverage ideals based on who they’re interviewing. Finding someone who truly believes in match zone coverages is key. Cover 4 ideally.

It seems that a switch to a 4-3 is alsoin the works. That would be done to get Mack and Quinn’s hand in the dirt and rushing the QB every snap. No more dropping into coverage. Need pressure with 4 to play two high coverages. Not easy. Exactly why they’re interviewing so many guys
If they chose James Bettcher it would be more because they believe in him as a person they’ve had in the building than what exactly he’s bringing schematically. He’s bringing HEAT often. Doesn’t exactly put your skeleton key in HIS best position to succeed.
The three guys I’m keying in on at this point is George Edwards, Jonathan Gannon and Aaron Glenn.
Edwards:
Most people will focus on his time with Dallas this season. Please don’t. As a SR D assistant he doesn’t have as much say as you’d think. More to observe and offer suggestions. His time with Minn involved a lot of cover 4 match. High level disguise/rotation experience

Gannon:
He’s great because he spent time with Edwards in Minnesota learning these defensive ideals and then spending time on the Colts outstanding staff where they run a lot of your standard cover 2. My hope is a blend of both with a discipline from his time in INDY

Glenn:
This guy is top shelf right now. He’s a future HC and will get big money DC dollars. Tough grab. He believes in more true press man than I’d like but his development with DBs for NOLA absolutely can’t be overlooked. What he could do for EJack and JJ can’t be overstated.

Regardless of what happens the #Bears are surprisingly going through the right process in their search. I truly believe in good thought out processes will lead to good results more times than not. It’ll be a tough decision but the back end is what is most important.
The career development of Eddie Jackson, Jaylon Johnson and the future nickel will be what determines the future outlook of this defense. That’s why you didn’t see a guy like Jay Rodgers who is plenty qualified kept in house. The lack of experience on the back end is too risky.
