Whew. The neoliberal bipartisan establishment is trying desperately to hold this thing together
Every time y’all see the Bushes, Clintons & Obamas publicly displaying their friendship as the club of former presidents, it’s part of the desperate PR attempt to hold the traditional neoliberal establishment together in the aftermath of Trump
For folks who are confused about what they witnessed today (or past ~40 yrs) the policies of the neoliberal bipartisan establishment (incl Reagan-Obama eras) gave rise to a fascist movement led by Trump which nearly overthrew the traditional neoliberal gov’t...
...Now that traditional neoliberal political establishment seeks to re-establish its power (aka “unify” & “returning to normalcy”) in the wake of Trump while remaining in willful denial about the failures of neoliberal policy & its direct connection to systemic racism & fascism.
Part of the PR campaign for this effort includes propaganda about “the peaceful transition of power” as represented by the camaraderie among the Clintons, Bushes & Obamas. The idea is that we “get back to the normal” which Trump disrupted w/o real analysis of how we got Trump.
The neoliberal establishment is still fundamentally invested in the police state, militarism, structural racism & neoliberal economic policies which involve using tax $ to fund private enterprise while divesting from public services. They oppose Trump but not as much as leftism.
But part of what happened with the Trump era is it exposed structural issues & corruption that long preceded Trumpism as well as the ugly face of racism which was always there but often downplayed by the bipartisan establishment. Trumpism weakened the traditional establishment.
Now that Trump has left those who remain in power in DC are trying to re-establish what they had pre-Trump, except they are in a weakened state b/c figures like McConnell—the GOP side of the establishment—don’t necessarily control the GOP party base.
I did another thread on this topic back in December: https://twitter.com/BreeNewsome/status/1334514275356975105?s=20
A major part of the neoliberal bipartisan establishment’s “get back to normal” narrative involves pretending the country wasn’t in upheaval until Trump took office— which again is about ignoring how the policies of the traditional establishment contributed to the turmoil.
