I get why people want to qualify or hedge any expression of optimism, happiness, or triumph. But no effort for justice is sustainable without joy, and celebration does not mean an end to hard work or a denial of ongoing struggle.

There was a lot of needless cruelty and unnecessary suffering that was imposed by the last administration that will end under this one. Even if not every problem is solved—that’s good.

A woman is Vice President for the first time, a symbol that adds dignity and completeness to women’s citizenship. Even if she’s not perfect—that’s good.

Joy is not a denial of the ongoing injustice but a kind of fuel to keep on fighting against it.
