How should the #Patriots address the QB position this offseason? Well, history suggests the best way to succeed is to have a first-round, homegrown quarterback under center:
In the last 30 years, just five teams have won a Super Bowl (16.6 percent) without a homegrown QB (’96 Packers, ’00 Ravens, ’02 Bucs, ’09 Saints, ’15 Broncos). Four of those teams – the ’09 Saints being the lone exception – had the league’s top ranked defense.
Since 1992, 17 different QBs have gone on to win a Super Bowl. Out of those 17, just five were either undrafted or selected outside of the first 33 selections (29 percent). History shows that it is tough to find a long-term starter when waiting until past the first-round.
Now this does not mean that the #Patriots should just take a QB in the first-round to take a QB. A player like Mac Jones will not automatically be the solution just because New England selects him in the first round...
...Finding the right guy is all that matters, but history shows those franchise players are significantly more likely to be found/selected in the first round.
