Sansar Chand took over the rein of his kingdom at a very young age and was restless to recapture the Kangra Fort of his dynasty which had been passed on the Mughals for about 160 years.
He was a big dreamer and dreamt of establishing old jalandhar-trigarta kingdom
He was a big dreamer and dreamt of establishing old jalandhar-trigarta kingdom
which his ancestors had held one day. However, the rise of Ranjit Singh of Punjab proved to an obstacle in realizing that dream. Unsuccessful at his endeavor, he planned to invade hill chiefs & invaded mandi ,suket, bilaspur all the way up to border ofJammu. By the 1800s,
Sansar Chand was among the most powerful rulers in the region, with a kingdom spreading across 27,000sq miles ,he established âChhattis Karkhanasâ under him more than 40K kangra paintings were produced
The attack on kahlur kingdom proved to be biggest mistake,
The attack on kahlur kingdom proved to be biggest mistake,
alarmed by the success of raja all hill chiefs & khalur raja appealed to Gorkhas of Nepal for help. Unlike smallhill rajas,Gorkhas were masters of hill warfare & powerful fighters. The combined army of hill chiefs, gorkhas fought against sansar chand army at mahal korian(Hamirpur)
But combined army was defeated by Sansar chand, gorkhas were waiting for revenge-As ill-luck would have it,Raja Sansar on the advice of his General Gulam Mohammad replaced existing army with rohillas to reduce economy burden, which was biggest mistake, this indeed was a great folly
By knowing the weakness of newly formed army,An army of 40,000 Gorkhas crossed over Sutlej river and invaded Sansar chand kingdom and the ruthless gorkhas plundered it, Kangra itself was under threat from Gorkhas. Sansar chand escaped in disguise,Faced with a terrible defeat,
He turned to Maharaja Ranjit Singh for help, In return for help against the Gorkhas, Sansar Chand promised Maharaja Ranjit Singh the fort of Kangra & the surrounding 76 villages, and finally gorkhas were defeated in 1809,he tried to wriggle out of his promise
However,Maharaja Ranjit Singh took Anirudh Chand, Sansar Chandâs son prisoner and marched into Kangra fort.Sansar Chand lost almost all that he had. All he got from the Sikhs was a small personal estate of which he had to pay an annual tribute of Rs 2, 00,000 to Lahore Durbar
It was a humiliating fall for a man who had ruled almost the entire Himachal region and earned the title of the âPahadi Badshahâ or the Emperor of the Hills
