Reflecting his philosophy, President’s Oval Office features portraits of Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Hamilton - and most prominently of all, FDR. Fun fact: Current location of the Oval dates to 1933, when Roosevelt had it moved so he could access it easier in his wheelchair
Apologies - photo in prior tweet via Bill O'Leary/The Washington Post, who got a sneak peek. This photo shows southern side of the Oval with the famous Resolute Desk, a gift to Rutherford Hayes from Queen Victoria
Don’t think though, that all presidents have used the Resolute desk. It languished, unused for decades, until Eisenhower used it for a basement TV studio (he won an Emmy - the first TV President was him, not JFK) But it was Jacqueline Kennedy who first put it in the Oval (more)
Kennedy used the Resolute desk, but it wouldn’t be used again until Carter (1977). Every president after him, with the exception of George H.W. Bush (1989) has used the Resolute. But there are other desks that incoming presidents can use (Bush loved his C&O desk, shown here)
