THREAD: congratulations to @POTUS for his Exec Order to re-join the US to the #ParisAgreement, giving the world a fighting chance of reaching its #1o5C warming limit. As of Nov 2020, the combined #netzero pledges would put warming at 2.1˚C in 2100: but more action is needed /2
/ President Biden’s #climate policies, including #NetZero by 2050, would result in cumulative emissions reductions between 2020 and 2050 of around 75 Gt CO2eq, leading to a decrease in end-of-century warming of around 0.1°C.
/ Now that the courts have struck down the Trump Administration’s weakening of the Clean Power Plan, this gives the Biden's team a clear run at meeting his goal of an #emissions free power sector by 2035.
/ Another area of action will be on transport, where there’s now an opportunity to increase emissions standards and shift the US towards #EV technologies, with huge potential. Stopping #Keystone great step, but need to get serious about #gas which cannot be a "bridging fuel"
/ We gave Obama’s 2016 #ParisAgreement target an “Insufficient” rating, but this sank to “Critically Insufficient” when Trump left the global treaty. When we see the new #NDC submitted to the #UNFCCC ahead of #COP26 later this year, we'll issue a new rating then.
