This is a great question. Four years ago, we made a conscious choice to shield our kids from politics during the Trump presidency. We didn’t discuss our opinions of him; we barely used his name, for fear of being too negative — of subjecting them to this bullshit, as you say. https://twitter.com/kerryhotice/status/1352012683273502722
When my oldest’s best friend said HE hated Trump — and Harry agreed, without having any basis for his so-called hatred — we tried to use it as a life lesson about forging his own opinions, not just following the crowd. He couldn’t hate Trump; he didn’t know anything about him.
That all changed when he caught the tail end of a news program — which honestly we’d tried to shield them from as well — discussing Trump’s policy of separating families at the border. He said, and I quote, “Why are they putting kids in cages? That’s not okay.”
To this day, my kids wouldn’t be able to tell you if Trump was a Republican or a Democrat. They don’t care. They know he doesn’t support Black Lives Matter; he incites violence; he promotes hatred and lies and division and things that their child hearts find hurtful and wrong.
They don’t know if he was a good President. They only know that he’s not a good person.
They’re not politicized. They simply have humanity.
