willard bowsky sure is as cool a director as they all say. great use of cinematic shots and diegetic sound for the opening as opposed to the usual music. some advanced stuff for mid-30's american cartoons.

bowsky also directed the first two popeye two-reelers (sinbad and ali baba) as well as some of the most surreal and imaginative betty boops like "minnie the moocher" and "mysterious mose," which are among the ones you think of when you hear about the "weird fleischer" style.
bowsky stayed with the studio into the early 40's as fleischer trasitioned to famous, until he enlisted in the army, becoming a platoon leader. tragically, he was killed in action in france, and was awarded a posthumous silver star. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willard_Bowsky
bowsky is also a very good director of slice-of-life cartoons. (how many pre-anime slice of life cartoons were there besides popeye?)
