Today's #WildcardWednesday discussion is inspired by this week’s “Annals On Call” podcast episode about COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. It’s a great 25 minute conversation between @gradydoctor and @medrants. We definitely recommend listening! https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/A20-0006#.YAYJaCvGXJg.twitter
Have you had conversations with patients, friends, or family who are hesitant to get the vaccine when it becomes available? How have you discussed these concerns when they come up?
If you listen to the podcast, you'll hear many factors that play into patients’ hesitancy to get the vaccine. As Dr. Manning mentions, it's always a good idea to ask why the individual you are talking to is concerned, and not make assumptions about their hesitance.
For more thoughts on this idea, check out this great thread from Dr. Manning describing a conversation with a patient who couldn't understand why she would volunteer to be in a vaccine trial. https://twitter.com/gradydoctor/status/1339962981455720448?s=21
It also touches on concerns about equity of inclusion of patients in the original vaccine trials. This is one factor driving patient's fears about the vaccine. See more in this article from NEJM. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2030033
