BREAKING: MP Derek Sloan says he has been expelled from the Conservative caucus after a vote from his (former) colleagues.
Sloan says he will sit as an independent MP and is urging his supporters to hold onto their Conservative memberships and attend the party's upcoming virtual convention.
"No matter how ugly – how undemocratic – the events of the last two days have been, always remember, the Party is not the personal property of Erin O'Toole; the CPC belongs to you – the grassroots of the Party," Sloan says in an email to his supporters.
Sloan vows to "still vote, debate, and represent true conservative values" as an independent MP.
Here's the full email from Sloan.
Derek Sloan has already been removed from the Conservative Party of Canada's list of MPs.
In a statement, Conservative leader Erin O'Toole says he voted to remove Derek Sloan because of a "pattern of destructive behaviour involving multiple incidents and disrespect towards the Conservative team for over a year" and not because Sloan is a social conservative.
