And what about the folks actively fighting white supremacists in our nation? The Southern Poverty Law Center has been fighting/monitoring hate groups since 1971 and are brilliant and dedicated individuals! Follow them at @splcenter, give them your money, and volunteer! 3/19
What about an organization who have been fighting for racial equality for generations? If you want to support an astonishing group of activists & lawyers, the folks at the NAACP (follow at @NAACP and @NAACP_LDF) are truly inspirational! Give them your money & time! 4/19
Despite some major advances this year, voting rights are still deeply threatened and the attack on them will not stop in the next four years...if you want to help, the absolutely incredible Fair Fight (follow at @fairfightaction) deserve your time and money! 5/19
Want to help some of the folks working hard for justice for our immigrant communities? My association of choice is the National Immigrant Justice Center, and they do some truly incredible work! Follow them at @NIJC and give them your money and time! 6/19
There is also the amazing New Sanctuary Coalition! These incredible folks helped me connect to local immigrant rights groups and get involved with asylum work years ago, and are a real inspiration in this field! Follow them at @NewSanctuaryNYC & give them your time/money! 7/19
Not feeling up to supporting lawyer groups? That's no problem! For immigrant rights, support the incredible workers at No Mas Muerte who are working so hard to help those who need so much! Follow them at @NoMoreDeaths, give them your money, and volunteer if you can! 8/19
In my own city is the astonishing group, Organized Communities Against Deportation (follow at @OCAD_CHI)! These incredible activists have done so much to advocate for our undocumented communities in Chicago and beyond and truly deserve any money or time you can give them! 9/19
What about LGBTQIA+ rights groups? Well, one local group I have love is the amazing Center on Halstead, which works hard for the community and are inspirational in the variety of services they provide! Follow them at @CenteronHalsted & give them your time/money! 10/19
If you want to support an utterly brilliant group working at the crossroads of racial and LGBTQIA+ justice, support Brave Space Alliance ( @BSAllianceChi)! They are one of the hardest working groups in the city, and do so much! Follow & give them your time/money! 11/19
And what about poverty, homelessness, & the problems caused by our unequal system? My go-to are the incredible folks at the Night Ministry ( @NightMinistry), whose incredible workers have been supporting our neglected communities my whole life! Give them money and volunteer! 12/19
I also want to mention the absolutely amazing folks at Metropolitan Family Services (follow at @MetroFamChicago) who support so many people here in Chicago, and who I have the privilege of working for in the CP4P initiative & DEFINITELY deserve your money/time! 13/19
More into saving our planet? You should DEFINITELY check out Earthworks! They have been on the front lines trying to prevent resource exploitation at the expense of our wilderness areas and are truly impressive folks! Follow them at @Earthworks and given them money/time! 14/19
What about Indigenous activists who have been fighting one of our oldest injustices for so long? I heartily recommend supporting the incredible organizers at First Nations Development Institute ( @FNDI303) who have done some astonishing work! Follow, volunteer, & contribute! 15/19
What about addressing our broken justice system? The amazing folks at the Coalition to End Money Bail ( @endmoneybond) and here in Chicago, the Chicago Community Bond Fund ( @ChiBondFund) are amazing and achieving real tangible change! Follow them & give them your time/money! 16/19
There's so much work to do, and the best time to get involved (if you were waiting on that perfect moment) is RIGHT NOW! Throughout history it's been brave activists working hard for decades that have made the changes we've seen in the world! Please support and join them! 17/19
Whatever the issue you care the most about, there is an organization in your community that has been working for years to address it! If you truly see hope in President Biden's inauguration, please turn that into action and get involved in any way you can! 18/19
TL;DR - Seriously, no politician is going to make the changes you want to see without huge activist pressure and work...and the best thing you can do with the hope you feel now is to translate it into action! Find a group, an issue, a cause and get involved! END!
