The lack of violence so far today is yet more evidence that Trump’s incitement was the central factor.
No doubt troops, etc. were important. But the right wing chatter was focusing on softer targets. But without Trump to give them the target and the signal, they didn’t move.
A weirdly large number of people want to give all credit to the National Guard or federal law enforcement. But that does little to explain how no one showed up at the state capitols, despite lots of online chatter. https://twitter.com/morganfmckay/status/1351934178493935620
Almost no one in Texas. https://www.statesman.com/story/news/2021/01/20/biden-inauguration-austin-follow-live-updates-texas-capitol/4229303001/?utm_source=SND&utm_medium=Twitter&utm_campaign=statesman
It appears that not having Trump giving them the date and the location — as well as the go signal — left the right wing mobs leaderless and unable to act.
More to the point, it's weird that supposed liberals would want to downplay how central it was for Trump to give the "let's go" signal for the Capitol riot.
