One quick reflection for new doctoral attendees @SSWRorg #SSWR2021. Particularly if you are feeling you don't know what to attend/ who to talk to. A thread
My 1st yr I didn't know which talks to go to or really what my elevator pitch was. Was I child welfare? Was I work-family policy? Was I gender issues?
4 yrs later I feel like I know the kind of presentations that excite me, and I have met so many people closely and tangentially related to my work. I've met others who do things I want to strive to do or who have lessons to share I can incorporate.
My dos: Go to talks that you think might excite you or teach you something new as much as you go to talks with the people in your close network. Try to engage on slack and next year (hopefully) in person! Ask questions! Observe and take it all in.
My don't: Don't worry too much about being in the "right" place or formally networking. Show up and you'll get something out of it!
Many of us are working together or in parallel toward addressing social problems and changing social work for the better. So start where you are and explore a lot of options.
