SB 2269 requires school counselor in every school as funds available w/ goal of 1 counselor for every 250 Ss. Counselors to create trauma-informed team to ID Ss impacted by trauma. @MissDeptEd to make trauma toolkit available to dsts.

Effective date of SB 2269 changed from upon passage to 7/1/21 on amendment offered by @briggs_hopson.

Senate Ed now considers SB 2305 authored by @SenDavidBlount to address our state’s teacher shortage.
SB 2305 creates the William Winter and Jack Reed, Sr., Teacher Loan Repayment Program - will repay undergrad education loans for first-year teachers for their 1st-3rd years of teaching. Differing $$ for those who teach in geographical critical shortage area & those who don’t.
SB 2305 consolidates loan forgiveness programs that have not been funded for # of years and have had significant default rates.
Every school district in state is eligible for program, but SB 2305 repays more for those who teach in geographical shortage area.
Senate Ed passes SB 2305. Bill is double referred to Senate Appropriations, so it now heads to that committee.
Now on to SB 2307 - cleans up current CODE & determination of Ss w/ dyslexia; if diagnosis doesn’t result in IDEA eligibility determination, dst must determine if eligible for 504 Plan. Dst develop interventions & services to address S needs. Requires 2 hrs staff trng every 3 yrs
SB 2307 authored by @NicoleAkinsBoyd who explains federal law already requires dsts to do so. She thanks @MissDeptEd staff for their work on bill. Senate Ed passes SB 2307.
