Since I’m not tweeting on eggshells anymore, I wish the AHL would offer some financial assistance to their players. European teams cover living expenses, while the AHL is currently offering only 40% of salaries. Many players will be paying to play this season.
Lots of players and families are living paycheck to paycheck and haven’t had any income in almost a year. They are currently at training camps without pay waiting for checks to come two weeks after games start.
The league minimum is $50,000. This will leave some players with $15k. They have to secure month to month housing in the city they are playing in (this could cost up to $3k) and some also pay for their permanent homes. Plus it’s very expensive to train in the off-season.
There’s been a lot of backlash about hockey players complaining about salaries. I know it’s been hard for everyone. However, not all pro hockey players are millionaires. Hockey is expensive to play. I just want to use my platform to shed some light.
