With 19th Jan, 2021 marking the 31st anniversary of KP exodus, I did an extensive research on what it's all about: scouring newspapers/print from late 80's to present day; opinion pieces; personal accounts (the whole shebang). I was going to make an elaborate thread on it, but...
...a lot of ppl on SM have already done it & I've looked up so many sources that it's difficult to compile them satisfactorily! I'll just share a few of the last pieces I looked up; a gist of what my take was & call it a day!...
"A Committee...in March 1990, said they âcould find no trace of communal antagonism between Hindus and Muslimsâ"
"...vested interests... spreading rumours...non-Muslims migrating...would be given free plot, cash...deliberate attempt to communalise..." https://www.nationalheraldindia.com/amp/story/opinion%2Fit-isnt-too-late-to-hold-a-judicial-inquiry-into-the-exodus-of-kashmiri-pandits

The role of Governor Jagmohan of BJP:
"...instead of providing...security...governor called for the KPs to temporarily relocate...KPs panicked and moved out... This migration of KPs suited the Hindu-Muslim narrative and aided BJP to gain electorally." https://www.counterview.net/2020/01/instead-of-providing-security-jagmohan.html?m=1

Ex-Governor Jagmohan was announced for Padma award:
"Patigaru later recounted how his schoolmates would refer to Jagmohan as âJagmaar watulâ or âlaash watulâ in Kashmiri, which loosely translates as someone who would lay down a heap of corpses." https://amp.scroll.in/article/802579/why-kashmiris-are-using-the-hashtag-jagmohanthemurderer-after-the-padma-award-announcement

"We know the Pandit exodus was a conspiracy...we will expose those who were involved from within the government if we are not rehabilitated. Kashmir...motherland and we want to go back. But now it looks like they have plainly used us for getting votes." https://m.thewire.in/article/rights/kashmiri-pandits-bjp-rehabilitation-resettlement/amp
On how others & not victims have taken over narrative:
"â...20 years, we estimate that 650 Pandits were killed...,â Tickoo says, adding: â...3,000 to 4,000 killings [as suggested by some Pandit organisations] is propaganda, which we reject.â" https://www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/2011/8/2/kashmiri-pandits-why-we-never-fled-kashmir

PM Manmohan Singh of UPA era (rehabilitation packages, jobs), did a lot more than this regime ever did (remembers KP only for votes) & to further their divisive agenda (CAA/NRC). They haven't done anything to relocate KPs. They were in power in 1990 too. https://www.thequint.com/amp/story/voices/opinion/kashmiri-pandits-against-caa-nrc-modi-amit-shah-regime-religious-discrimination-democracy
Governor Jagmohan was a part of the BJP's outreach program for drumming up support for Abrogation of Article 370 & 35 A. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.tribuneindia.com/news/archive/j-k/amit-shah-jp-nadda-meet-former-j-k-governor-jagmohan-827268
If you look through the massive political upheavals in JK from late 70's to the BJPs Ayodhya related carnage (which created new communal tensions & revived old ones); the KP exodus is all about politics. And when divisiveness is added as fuel to it, you'll get a raging fire!...
...In most of the articles, they say that the exodus was conducted "logistically". The whole matter is really sad! The current regime's party has been gaining electorally from the KP exodus till today! Both KM & KP were killed mercilessly during that tumultuous time...
...What I understood was, if you want peace/harmony in a diverse community; never let a party that owes its existence/relevance to hate/division; come to power in that place. From Gujarat, UP, JK to every place they rule, they bring a wave of riots, communal tension & the like...
...You don't even have to research: just listening to speeches is enough! They openly declare their agenda. Nobody deserves their lives being reduced to collateral damage in a political war. I hope India rises above the pettiness of hate & becomes a force to reckon with someday.
