Thread exploring Aberdeen's team this season, what we need to do well and how to improve:
This for me is the best team we can play if we continue with 3 at the back (personally I would change). Including Watkins because his play is so vital and he does things cosgrove/main don’t.
In this formation we need a lot of fluidity. Starting from back, important that Considine and Hoban have had experience as full backs as they can offer overlapping runs for wing backs to ask questions of opposition fullbacks to either track run or intercept pass.
Important as over 75% of our overall attacks this season come from wide areas, so really important we don’t constantly use the same style of attack ie trying to win a 1v1, so opposition don’t become aware of our threat and nullify.
In midfield, firstly about Lewis Ferguson. Absolutely love him, will go on to have a great career but I think the idea around him is a bit misty. Too many expect him to play similar to Christie, Maddison role etc but truth is he’s more box-to-box rather than big creative spark.
. His running helps us at both ends of the pitch, averages 1.6 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game as well as 1.8 shots per game and 0.8 key passes. McCrorie also brilliant but more defensive than Ferguson, but they complement each other so well.
McCrorie has to help out a little in build-up due to formation because if not game slows down and he becomes ineffective(see Scott brown in recent months when Celtic played 3 at the back). McCrorie averages 2.1 tackles per 90, does the work in middle to stop counters and protect.
Now the forward position. If we want to continue with 3-4-3 and rumours are true ie Stoke want Cosgrove, sell. Striker in this formation has to offer more in buildup, drop into half spaces to affect linkup & be first line of press, to try win the ball back as soon as its lost.
All these Cosgrove and Main don’t do (Watkins averages 0.6 tackles per 90 compared to Cosgroves 0.3), but Marley Watkins does. This is also why I wouldn’t be so against the return of Greg Stewart, as he is closer to Watkins than Cosgrove/Main are.
. Linkup with Hedges/Wright/Watkins is interchangeable, all can create (All 3 average more than 1 key pass per game so create chances) and all have ability to run with ball (Again all 3 average 1 or more dribble per 90 compared to 0.8 and 0.5 from Cosgrove and Main).
