. @hatelovepodcast yay for roller derby! Whip It is all about banked track derby, so I wanted to give you and the IHIBILI fans some quick info about flat track derby - which is very different and (in my biased opinion) better!
First, lemme just say that flat track is much more about defense (take away the jammer's space! control opponent momentum! lock down and be soul-crushing!) and much less about manic speed and wild haymaker hits. Whips are actually... very rare.
The wall around banked tracks makes me so nervous! Flat track has very clear rules about how close walls can be (read: not close at all). So if/when you fall during a bout due to being hit or just being on skates, there's no danger of you smashing into walls.
FYI many flat track athletes are opting to go by their last names rather than "traditional" derby names - to each their own! So Scald Eagle will share the track with Wierzbinski, and Loren Mutch shares jammer duties with Beyond Thunderdame. It's great.
Re: being a Bambi on skates - My league ( @royalcityroller) has a semi-annual Intro to Derby program (not during pandemic). When you meet basic safety and skill requirements, you join our rookie team. After one season of playing, you get "drafted" onto one of our rec level teams!
And now some videos: the basic rules of flat track derby, ft. some fab players
Highlights from day 1 of the 2019 @WFTDA World Championships, held in Montreal! We brought our 5-month-old son to it, we got to meet some of my idols, it was amazing.
And finally, some derby names based on IHIBILI episodes:
- Neverending Gory
- Beatlejuice
- Hurlesque
- Thigh Fidelity
- Spice Whirled

All on a podcast hosted by Kat Angst and Jocelyn "Fistula 2" Geddie (sorry that one's too bad/good to change)
