In October last year, @DC_Protts came back to work in North Surrey CID.

She had stage 4 bowel cancer, and knew her life expectancy was limited, but wanted to spend her days making a difference to other people.

On Monday she passed away peacefully, at only 38 years old.

We're devastated.

She was a brilliant cop, and a wonderful friend.

Alex joined us in 2004 working in ICT, then the Diversity Directorate. She became a Special Constable from 2007, a role she carried out alongside a move to the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) before becoming a PC in July 2014, then a detective in North Surrey.

In March 2018 Alex secured Surrey's first conviction for human trafficking offences (one of the first in the country).

The trial lasted five weeks, and was conducted in Hungarian, with translators.

It was an astounding piece of work, and she rightfully earned both a judge's commendation, and a Chief Constable's commendation for her hard work. #Thread https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=290279034912722
All through that investigation and trial, Alex was suffering with what she described in her characteristic humour as "bum trouble". Less than 2 weeks after the sentencing in April, Alex received her cancer diagnosis.

Alex's journey following diagnosis, and her ongoing fight to raise awareness of #BowelCancer, was documented in her blog http://www.stanleythestoma.com/ .

She always said that she couldn’t do anything about her own situation, but she could raise awareness for others.

Alex was truly inspirational. Not only was she an outstanding detective with a heart of gold, but an incredible person with a wicked sense of humour and an infectious laugh.

Finally, the cause possibly most important to @DC_Protts: @bowelcanceruk.

Alex was passionate about the work Bowel Cancer UK do to raise awareness of Bowel Cancer, understand it, treat it and prevent it. #Thread https://www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk/
Stand down Prottsie @DC_Protts.

You made a difference to so many people, but your shift is done. You were the best of us. We'll miss you more than you know, but we won't forget you or your work.
