A 🧵: After the past 4 years of chaos, it's worth looking back at Trump’s catastrophically failed quest to rig the #2020Census to secure more political power for the GOP.

Luckily, activists & organizations like ours fought back against his anti-democratic pursuit. Here’s how⬇️
In 2017, the Trump admin announced that it would add a citizenship question to the #2020Census, saying the addition of the question would help to better enforce the VRA. But files of the deceased GOP strategist Thomas Hofeller revealed the real motivation behind the question.
After #SCOTUS found the Trump admin’s effort unlawful, Trump issued an executive order to compile administrative records that he could provide to states in order to manipulate state districting boundaries, further exposing his true intent behind adding the citizenship question.
Trump hoped to receive the data necessary to execute this discriminatory policy by January 20. But he failed.

He failed to re-conceive the bedrock principle of our democracy. And just today President Biden announced that he would officially reverse the Trump policies.
Even after it became clear that #2020Census data wouldn’t be ready until March due to the need to ensure data quality, Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham was caught pushing for a last-minute data report about noncitizens.
As Trump leaves office, we are grateful for the tireless work activists and organizations put into ensuring the citizenship question would never land on the #2020Census, and that undocumented residents would not be excluded from the apportionment count.
Today, as we take in the #BidenHarrisInauguration, we begin the necessary work to build back a better and more inclusive union, and continue to work toward a democracy that ensures everyone is counted, no exceptions.
