A year ago I thought content marketing was a waste of time. I thought it took too long to see the ROI and it wasn't scalable.
I was wrong. We saw great results as soon as we started publishing content for ourselves and for our clients.

Step 1: We set an ambitious target
Create a B2B niche website that generates 10K visitors per month.
This translates to roughly 100-400 leads per month. Enough to build a small business on.
Next, our audience...

Using a random Chrome scraping plugin, I analyzed all the different software categories on Capterra.
By cross-checking CPC and keyword difficulty from Ahrefs I was able to identify a hitlist.

I learned there was a specific category for Zoo Management Software! Not our niche of choice though.
In a few hours, we found our pick… And, no, I'm not going to share it here, because we're about to own it. But more on that later.

Next up, content:
We used a couple of SEO content tools to make sure we're writing the most in-depth content possible. Google likes that and readers appreciate it, too.
We ended up using Topic (affiliate link): https://www.usetopic.com/?fpr=lucas40

Then, mapping content:
We started our research process with Ahrefs. And, we're sticking to the Keyword Golden Ratio, coined by @nichesitepm (it works!!)
Basically, search for long-tail keywords that have some traffic and almost no competition. https://mangools.com/blog/keyword-golden-ratio/

Then, the writing started...
We followed the instructions by Topic (created by @ryochiba and @Aitharaju) and wrote 1500 - 2000 word articles, always aiming for their "A+ rating". High information density and wide usage of terms. This was the hardest part, to be honest.

When our first 10 articles were done, we built a simple WordPress website with a lightweight Magazine theme.
I made sure we scored well on Google's PageSpeed Index. SLL, Cloudflare, etc. Not 100/100, though. I got to 93/100, which was enough for a start...

Then, the big moment!
On October 1st, we “launched” the website. We simply linked to it from another tiny website I own.
I made sure Google Search Console was activated. Aaand the waiting started…

Within one week, we had our site appear on page 5 for a very long-tail keyword. Not spectacular but I was excited!
We continued the grind. And, two weeks later, we got our first backlink from a website in the same category!

Now the real fun started. I tried to acquire more links and posted a couple of guest blogs.

We're now doing 250+ visitors on some days. Software vendors link to us organically.
The big takeaway? I guess there is no magic bullet to SEO. Just write good stuff, create a solid website, sprinkle some backlinks, and you should do well.

Ooh, the biggest takeaway is probably that all SEO tools have issues estimating traffic for niche keywords! We're getting hundreds of clicks on keywords that are missing in reports or reported as 100/month searches.
